Monroe Deserves Facts, Not Political Theater

There is a serious difference between an investigation, an allegation, and proof.

Right now, Councilman Gary Anderson is being dragged into the public square over claims that, so far, have produced more political noise than public evidence. We have searched for public records, arrest reports, and court filings tying Anderson to a criminal charge. At this time, we have not found a public arrest record, a filed criminal case, or any official finding of wrongdoing.

That matters.

It does not mean something didn’t happen. It does not mean questions should not be asked. It does not mean law enforcement should be ignored. If there is a real investigation, it should be handled by professionals, not by political rivals using innuendo as a campaign tool.

Don’t forget, William Dotson worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, and he may just be calling in a few favors from his buddies against a political rival.

What Monroe residents should be deeply concerned about is the way this issue is being pushed. The two loudest voices demanding action are not neutral observers. They are political opponents with a history of conflict involving Anderson. That history does not automatically make their concerns false, but it absolutely raises the bar for transparency, caution, and fairness.

Public office does not erase due process. A person should not be politically convicted because someone says the word “investigation” loudly enough. If there is evidence, let it come forward through the proper channels. If charges are filed, let the public see them. If wrongdoing is proven, then accountability must follow.

And let us be clear: if credible evidence shows that Councilman Anderson committed serious misconduct, we will not defend him. If wrongdoing is proven, we will support his removal. No elected official is above accountability, and no political ally deserves protection at the expense of the public trust.

But accountability is not the same thing as a witch hunt. And, as we’ve seen, these headline grabbing “investigations” are their game plan. See: Councilwoman Anthony and Michelle Ball's claims against her.

Monroe has seen enough personal vendettas dressed up as public virtue. Residents deserve leaders who solve problems, not leaders who weaponize rumors. They deserve a council focused on roads, growth, public safety, transparency, traffic, housing, and the everyday issues that affect people’s lives.

If this matter is real, let law enforcement do its job.

If it is political theater, those pushing it should be ashamed. I mean, they don’t feel shame, so let's hope the next council has the courage to stand up to Burns. Maybe we could get a little compensation for the money he and William are wasting on this “investigation”.

Either way, Monroe deserves facts before judgment. Especially Burns’ judgment.
