Monroe Voices, Monroe Choices
Following the mayoral election of 2023, our founder Steven Stegall was dismayed at the results. It seemed like he was living in two different Monroes; one was loving, kind, neighborly, and supportive. The other was a group who had taken it upon themselves to attack the freedoms of our friends and family.
Steven wanted to organize citizens to reassure himself that Monroe was still the city that he grew up in.
One where neighbors would support each other rather than fabricate lies in the name of politics.
And so, Change for Monroe was born.
Drawing Bigger Circles
At Change for Monroe, "Drawing Bigger Circles" is more than a slogan. It is the principle that guides everything we do.
We believe Monroe is strongest when every resident has the opportunity to belong, contribute, and be heard. Building a better community means intentionally making room for people who have too often been overlooked, excluded, or made to feel unwelcome.
That includes, but is not limited to:
LGBTQ+ neighbors
Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous, and other communities of color
Immigrants and refugees
People with disabilities
Veterans and military families
Seniors
Young people
Working families and people facing economic hardship
People of every faith, and those with no religious affiliation
Anyone who has ever felt like there wasn't a place for them in Monroe
Drawing Bigger Circles does not mean pushing anyone out. It means pulling more people in.
We welcome conservatives, liberals, independents, Republicans, Democrats, and those who have given up on politics altogether.
We believe meaningful change begins when neighbors choose conversation over division, service over slogans, and community over conflict.
We know we won't agree on every issue.
That's okay.
We don't believe agreement is a prerequisite for respect.
Our commitment is simple: every person deserves to be treated with dignity, every voice deserves the opportunity to be heard, and every neighbor deserves a place in Monroe's future.
The circle isn't getting smaller.
We're drawing it bigger.
